Profile

I graduated from The University of Melbourne in 1998 with a Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and also a Bachelor degree in Medical Science (BMedSc).

I started doctor life as a resident at Geelong Hospital in 1999, and subsequently did postgraduate training throughout several Victorian Hospitals, including The Austin Hospital, Royal Children's Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and Mercy Hospital for Women.   In addition to 5 years of Anaesthetic training, I have completed 2 years of Intensive Care training, and have maintained a professional interest in medical research.

In 2010 I moved back to Geelong, and currently enjoy a diverse practice in non-cardiac anaesthesia.   I enjoy the broad variety of patients seen from the Geelong community, ranging from infants to centenarians, in most specialties of medicine.

In between work I’m kept busy with my haematologist wife and 4 children, living on acreage and pretending to be a farmer!

I prefer a down-to-earth approach to patient care, based on openness and honesty, and will always do my best to make sure that the anaesthetic is tailored to the individual needs of my patients.   Be prepared for a laugh before your anaesthetic!

I was born and raised in Geelong and practise at all the local hospitals.   I am married and have 3 boys.   During the mid-nineties I obtained a medical degree through the University of Melbourne.   My subsequent anaesthetic training was predominantly at the Austin, Royal Children’s and Geelong hospitals.   Once fully qualified, I worked at Geelong Hospital (Barwon Health) and as a visiting specialist at the Royal Children’s Hospital for 7 years before joining GAG in 2013.   Professional areas of interest include anaesthesia for ophthalmic, paediatric, orthopaedic and obesity surgery.

External interests include family, friends, food, the mighty Cats, gardening, woodwork, bees, words, energy efficiency and new technologies amongst other things.   I am concerned that this description makes me sound like a bit of a nerd...   My aim is to keep you safe, relaxed and comfortable throughout your perioperative experience.

I trained in anaesthetics in Melbourne and have worked on every continent (except 4), returning to Geelong in 1998 after which I have worked full-time in the specialty locally.   My main practice areas are currently otolaryngology (ENT), orthopaedics, obstetrics, ophthalmology and obesity surgery – anything beginning with an “o” really.

When not at work, I like to be at home.   And if I can’t be at either place, I try to avoid the family by running, riding or swimming – preferably downhill, and not all on the same day.

After graduating in Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1985, I initially trained in General Practice at the Box Hill Hospital.   Components of this included the Diploma in Obstetrics and the Diploma in Anaesthetics (UK).   This latter rotation sparked an interest in Anaesthesia and, on returning to Australia, I joined the St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne Anaesthetic training program.   In my final year I completed a fellowship year at Massachusett's General Hospital, Boston and subsequently qualified as a Specialist Anaesthetist in 1996.   I served as a staff specialist at St Vincent's and Geelong Hospitals for 5 years.

In 2001 I entered private practice joining the Geelong Anaesthetic Group where I currently serve as the Chairman.   I have a special interest in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and hold certification in Perioperative Transoesophageal Echocardiography.   I am currently a supervisor of final year medical students from Deakin University Medical school.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy active adventurous holidays with my wife including family cycling tours, bush walking, camping and scuba diving.   I volunteer annually for a charity aiding cataract and eye surgery in Vietnam and Cambodia.

I graduated from Monash Medical school with honours in 1997 planning to pursue a career in surgery.    I quickly realised I was more interested in anaesthesia completing my fellowship in 2007.   My specialist career began at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne before returning to my home town Geelong in 2009.   I have enjoyed working in every hospital in Geelong over the last 10 years providing anaesthesia to patients both young and old.    Now I focus the majority of my work at St John of God Hospital.   I find all aspects of anaesthesia interesting and challenging and have a particular interest in orthopaedics and plastic surgery.

Outside of work I am happily married and a busy mum to 3 amazing children.   When not running children to cricket, netball, swimming or football I enjoy cake and biscuit decorating, reading, surfing and following the Geelong Cats!

After completing an undergraduate medical degree at Melbourne University my association with Geelong began with an intern year at Geelong Hospital in 1998.    After a few years working as a resident I left Geelong to take up specialty training in anaesthesia at the Alfred Hospital, completing this in 2006. My initial specialist work was at the Alfred and Royal Women’s Hospital but in 2008 an opportunity to return to Geelong arose, and I joined Geelong Anaesthetic Group. I currently work wholly in private practice, with broad interests including ENT, orthopaedics, urology, plastic surgery and endoscopy.    I am a member of ANZCA and the ASA, and participate in their professional development programs.    I am involved in teaching medical students and nursing staff at both St John of God and Epworth Hospitals.

When not working I try to keep up with my wife and three children while dreaming about my next surfing opportunity.

Having started my career in London, I moved to Australia to explore a career in critical care medicine.   I have been lucky enough to enjoy a variety of work including flying to all corners of the state as a Retrieval Physician with Ambulance Victoria.   Now I’ve settled down a bit and work full time as an anaesthetist in both the public and private hospitals in Geelong.

I love spending as much time as possible with my young family, but I also have two dogs, two cats and multiple chickens who fill any rare left over spare time.   We are lucky to live in a rural area allowing me to keep a bee hive for home grown honey and I attempt to grow my own fruit and vegetables.   I enjoy running, hiking and cycling and have taken part in many fun-run events around the state.
